Consulate General of Russia in Cape Town holds National Day reception

On June 15, 2016, Consulate General of Russia in Cape Town held a reception on the occasion of the “Russia Day”.
The event was attended by members of Parliament of the Republic of South Africa, representatives of the Western Cape Government and the office of the mayor of Cape Town, members of the Consular Corps, business and cultural community as well as Russian compatriots.
Consul General Mr Roman Ambarov addressed the assembled guests with a speech about the history and the meaning of the holiday in modern Russia.
The national anthems of the Russian Federation and the Republic of South Africa were performed by members of the world-famous and award-winning Stellenbosch University Choir.
A photo exhibition depicting modern Russia by Günter Komnick, prominent South African photographer, was presented to the attendees.
The reception was imbued with various attributes of Russian culture. A documentary «From Hermitage with Love» was screened for the entertainment of the guests. The film was provided with the assistance of HE Senator Vadim Tyulpanov, leader of the “Friendship Group of the Council of the Federation of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation with the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) of the Parliament of the Republic of South Africa”. Among other attractions was a recording of the «Nutcracker» ballet by Pyotr Tchaikovsky performed by the renowned Mariinsky Theatre.
